Trivia[]
- The title is a reference to the 1984 baseball film The Natural and the novel that it is based on.
- Linda tells Louise she has a Spanish edition of the E.L. James erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey which she found on the bus, entitled Cincuenta Sombras de Grey. This is, in fact, the correct title of Spanish translations of the novel, with Grey being the character Christian Grey's last name rather than the color gray (spelled grey in UK English) which would translate as gris in Spanish.
- Gene's attitudes towards playing on a little league team were directly inspired by show creator Loren Bouchard's nephew's attitudes towards being on a team.[1]
- Falafel on a Waffle and First Oceanside Savings Bank have advertisements at the ballpark where Gene plays his first game.
- We learn in this episode that the previously seen Prince of Persuasia is definitely a con-man. As well as running a baseball camp in this episode and calling himself "The Deuce of Diamonds," he also poses as "The Closer of close-up magic" and "The Iceman of inkjet printer repair." His real name remains unknown.
- Tina's caffeine withdrawal hallucination is a direct reference to Rent-Boy's heroin withdrawal hallucinations in the movie Trainspotting.
- Tina rowing in a teacup with a spoon is a reference to Disney's Alice in Wonderland.
- Teddy's pickup truck (or one that looks like it) appears parked next to the Deuce's car in the parking lot by the ballpark.
- Similar to a baseball card, the script cover shows Gene's picture on a baseball card with his name on the bottom.
- Linda searches something on "Yoohoogle," a mashup parody of the search engines Yahoo and Google.
Goofs[]
- The Deuce's DVD "The Iceman of inkjet printer repair" misspells repair as repairi. The extra i could actually be an exclamation point, however.
- When Gene steps up to the plate during the Devil's game, the D on his helmet appears reversed before turning the correct way round.
- The bumper on the Deuce's car is colored purple when Linda and Gene walk over to it instead of silver in all other shots.
